Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook
As the mom of a second grade girl, I’m well acquainted with Junie B. Jones. The series was wildly popular in my daughter’s class this year, and she could barely contain her excitement at getting to see Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook, the latest production at Adventure Theatre.
Junie B. Jones is the world’s funniest kindergartner. But something NOT funny has happened to Junie B. Her grandfather bought her the most wonderful pair of furry black mittens…and someone STOLE THEM! They didn’t even put them in the Lost and Found at school. So when Junie B. finds a wonderful pen on the floor, she should be allowed to keep it. After all, “finders keepers, losers weepers”, right?
Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook is really a fun play. As soon as you walk into the theater you will be mesmerized by the colorful set. The actors did a fabulous job of bringing the beloved characters to life and while the entire cast is outstanding, the actress who plays Junie B. is spectacular. We felt like we jumped right into the pages of the book. There are several musical numbers, which add so much flair to the production – my daughter said the songs were one of her favorite parts. My daughter’s other favorite part was a bit of magic with the lost and found box in the principal’s office. She talked all the way home about how they managed to do that!
My favorite part of Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook was watching my daughter and the other children in the audience being enchanted seeing the story come to life. The books are so popular because they are so relatable to kids. Junie B. says what’s on her mind and talks the way that kids talk. Seeing the characters that she loves come to life on stage was truly special.
Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook is appropriate for all ages. You don’t need to have read any of the books to enjoy the play – it’s easy to follow for all. And, of course, the teacher side of me enjoyed hearing so many children asking their parents to buy them a Junie B. Jones book on the way out!
Adventure Theater is a small, intimate theater that’s perfect for children. Seating is first-come, first served, and there truly isn’t a bad seat in the house. The actors do go into the audience several times (up the stairs), so pick your seats accordingly. We also like that it is not too loud, even during the musical numbers. The show runs a little over one hour with no intermission – the perfect length for children. I love that we have such a great opportunity to introduce my daughter to the joys of live theater so close to home.
Adventure Theater is located at Glen Echo Park. The theater is a bit of a walk from the parking lot, so leave yourself a little extra time to get there. We always stop at the carousel after the show (and my daughter wanted me to note that the carousel ride is extra long) and there is a playground a picnic area as well.
Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook runs through August 13, 2017. There are multiple shows a day on the weekends as well as shows at various times Mondays and Fridays. Tickets for all ages are $19.50 each. Several shows are already sold out so be sure to purchase tickets online before heading to the theater.
