Silver Knights now offers three different great types of summer camp! More than a hundred weeks of summer camp, all over Northern Virginia and and Maryland! Chess Camps – Spend a week playing and learning about chess with Silver Knights! We’ve taught tens of thousands of children including national champions, but most students are beginners looking to learn and have fun! Campers are broken up in groups by skill level. Each camper receives a T-shirt and a tournament-style chess set. Activities include learning the rules, openings, tactics, endgames, studying master games, and playing lots of games against other students. Campers will take breaks for snacks and fresh air. Coding Camps In Silver Knights Coding Camp, children learn to create stories, games, and animations using a visual programming language called Scratch. It’s as easy to use as snapping together building blocks! With Scratch, children learn to think creatively, work collaboratively, and reason systematically. Projects like mazes and platform games make learning logic, coding, and animation fun and creative! Our curriculum teaches new coders the basics while challenging more experienced coders to create increasingly complex programs. Silver Knights provides a laptop for every child. Engineering Camps Every day we will explore engineering through collaborative, hands-on activities using the Engineering Design Process (Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, and Improve). Each camp is framed by intrepid fictional siblings India and Jacob who travel the world and encounter problems that can be solved with engineering. There are three different types of engineering camps: Rockets and Rovers Jacob is at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory learning how to engineer rovers that can be used to explore faraway worlds. Meanwhile, India is learning about the trade-offs and variables involved in making rockets as she blasts off to the International Space Station. Kids will use the Engineering Design Process to build air-powered rockets and rovers to help India and Jacob explore the planets and moons of our solar system. To the Rescue: Aid Drop! Monsoon rains can cause severe flooding that cuts people off from important supplies. Kids will design and make aid drop packages, parachutes, and canopies that can be dropped from an aircraft and protect what’s inside. Hop to it! In this camp, we’ll learn about invasive species like the cane toad — what they are, why they’re bad for native species, and how to engineer a series of humane traps to catch them!
