The Scene The old gift shop at the National Cathedral has been turned into a cafeteria-style restaurant with gourmet pastries and a good selection of breakfast and lunch options. Patrons are an unusual mix of people sitting for a while with their computers, tourists to the Cathedral, and locals stopping by for a good meal. Seating is mostly tables and chairs but there are a few sofas and arm chairs as well. In nice weather there is ample seating on an outdoor patio. Order at the counter then carry your meal to your table. The Food There is a great selection of delicious pastries as well as plenty of all-day breakfast and lunch options. Breakfast options include a variety of sweet and savory waffles, granola, yogurt, fruit plates, frittatas, and an egg sandwich. Lunch options include a variety of salads, sandwiches, and paninis, and soups. You can also choose from a large tea and hand-crafted coffee selection. The Kid Appeal My kids were immediately drawn to the large selection of games available to choose from near the entrance. There is a kids menu including pb&j, grilled cheese, and waffle bites. There are also plenty of kid-friendly options among the regular offerings, including the great pastry selection and large number of waffle toppings and milkshakes. It’s a great spot to stop before or after visiting the National or the lovely (and kid-friendly) Bishop’s Garden right next to the café. Noise level The noise level is generally low but can get loud when a rush of people come in. High chairs/boosters High chairs are available. Changing tables Yes Review and photos by Jamie Davis Smith.
