The Big Kahuna of art museums on the Mall, the National Gallery of Art is best approached in bite sized pieces, even for adults. There is alot to see here, so consider sampling a gallery at a time over several visits. Visit the National Gallery of Art Kids website for detailed calendar listings. Next door is that Geometry teacher’s dream, the East Wing. It houses traveling exhibits and is a great public space in its own right. An enormous Calder mobile in the main hall will entertain toddlers. Bonus: the two buildings are connected by an underground space which includes a cafeteria and bookstore, and best of all, an inside view of the pyramidal waterfalls outside.
