Drag Queen Story Hour Comes to DC

Drag Queen Story Hour has been popular in other cities for some time and it has finally made its way to the DC area with much excitement.

Drag Queen Story Hour is a simple concept. Just like any other story time, children listen to stories and sing songs.  The only difference is that this story time is lead by a Drag Queen. My son and I had a blast as did most of the other kids in the packed room.  In Drag Queen Story Hour the focus is always on accepting yourself, and those around you, for who they are even if that means being a little (or a lot) different.

In the story hour my son and I attended, books were selected to celebrate difference and diversity while being funny and age-appropriate for the mostly five-and-under crowd.  A Drag Queen read stories about a boy who grew wings and learned to embrace them and a girl who liked to accessorize everyone and everything.  We also got up and moving with songs like head-shoulders-knees-and-toes.

After story time, children were invited to make Valentine’s to themselves celebrating whatever they love most.  My four-year-old son was delighted with the glitter and stickers available and made himself a Dump Truck Valentine.  While making crafts, the Drag Queen walked around talking to children about their Valentines, posing for photos, and answering questions.

This Drag Queen Story Hour was presented in partnership with the DC Public Library.  After story hour, a small mobile library was set-up and parents could check-out the books read during story hour as well as several other books selected by the librarian.

Drag Queen Story Hour will be presented monthly in DC.  There are plans to expand story hour throughout the area into Virginia and Maryland.

This story hour with a twist – and flair- is very well done and is a welcome addition to activities for the toddler and pre-school set.  Check out DC Public Library Story Time listings and Drag Queen Story Hour for upcoming events.
